Work was starting to get to Bensen. No, false statement, work always got to him. It was just another drawback that came with working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He should have been happy, thrilled even, considering that he had just closed yet another case and brought some justice into the world. However, just a few hours ago, he had pulled the trigger and let a bullet fly through an assailant’s head. Contrary to some beliefs, no amount of experience or time would ever make ending another person’s life easy, well at least not for any noble man.
And so he sat, resting his elbows on the bar and occasionally taking a large sip out of the Corona Bottle that sat in front of him. There was too much going on around him, too many voices, too much laughter, and too much light. There was just too much of everything and it set his head on fire. Part of him wanted to just call Lucy and tell her that he wasn’t up for anything tonight so that he could just go home and pass out in the hopes that he’d feel better in the morning. Another part of him, however, told him to just wait because everything would resolve itself once she got there.
It wasn’t that he was in love with her, he just… No, forget that, he was definitely in love with her. It wasn’t that he was afraid to tell her, he just… Yeah, he was pretty much terrified. It wasn’t fear for his dignity though; he honestly couldn’t care less about that in the given situation. It was fear for their relationship. If he came out and told her how he really felt, and she didn’t feel the same way, they would risk ruining their professional relationship and their standing as best friends.
It was a difficult position for him to be in, especially considering that Lucy wasn’t always extremely open with her emotions nor did she even believe in love per say. So while she went out on dates and connected with other men, he got to watch from the bench and hope that one day he would be put in to play. And despite all of this, the bona fide truth was that after all that they had been through together, he knew that she loved him, even if it was in an unspoken, best friend kind of way. And as silly as it may have sounded, he was absolutely content with that.
